Ireland - What on the Irish / Ireland Shelf                         Scotland             Welsh

Since the last newsletter we have purchased from the NZSG 's Irish Interest Group the handouts of
several workshops that have been held at previous times (not in Dunedin). Other Irish research guides
were also available so we have bought those too. Look for them on the lower Irish shelving in a green box
labelled "Publications from the NZSG Irish Group" (Received April 2010)

As you can see from the notes below the research guides are designed to assist you in your research into
your Irish family history. You will need a quiet couple of hours at the library to go through the papers but
you will find that they are easy to follow and are most informative. (You will be warm with the heater on
and you can also take a break and make a cup of coffee.)

Irish Testamentary Records (Wills)
Comprehensive notes covering all aspects of Irish testamentary records, including; will terminology,
format, types of wills, probate records, administrations, repositories where wills are to be found, how to
discover if a will exists, whereto find them, and much, much more! (36 pages)

Irish Newspapers as a Genealogical Source
Comprehensive notes explaining the type of information to be found in newspapers (biographical notices,
etc), dates and coverage of historical newspapers county by county, newspaper indexes, the repositories
where newspapers may be found and how to access them. (24 pages)

Ireland's Registry of Deeds
Comprehensive notes detailing the history of the Registry of Deeds, the types of documents to be found,
the process of registration, an explanation of the two indexes to the deeds, terms & their meanings, etc.
There is also a complete listing of the 2,687 LDS microfilm numbers to enable you to order a film to your
local LDS Family History Centre or an LDS approved agency. (36 pages)

Demystifying Griffith's Valuation
Griffith's Valuation was conducted between 1830 and 1864 and is, today, widely used as a census
"substitute" for Ireland. This publication is a brief introductory guide to this valuable resource.

Griffith's Valuation: using the microfiche version
Undoubtedly the most widely known of the Irish "census substitutes". Unfortunately, it is often
misunderstood and users of the microfiche version (available at various public libraries and other
repositories) are often unsure how to employ it effectively. This step-by-step guide aims to eliminate the
confusion and make the reader a proficient user, maximising their benefit from this valuable resource.

This publication includes three templates for use in your research.
The Cancelled Land Books Of Ireland: where to find them and how they may be used
These 'cancelled' books note the changes in ownership/occupation of land subsequent to the first printed
series of Griffith's Valuation books. This publication gives an in-depth account (with illustrations) of how to
approach and understand these records. An essential research tool for the intermediate level researcher
who has found their ancestors in 'Griffiths' and is asking themselves, "What next?"

Irish Census Records
While acknowledging that many records were destroyed, this paper (suitable for both novice and
advanced researcher) clearly identifies what census records remain, the information they contain, and
exactly where and how the records may be accessed. Many relevant LDS microfilm numbers are included
and there are some very useful blank census forms for transcribing your family information.

An Introduction to Irish Estate Records
The intent of this guide is to inform the reader of the types of records that may be found, suggest how and
where they may be found, and proffer advice on how to access them.

Researching the Parish Registers of Ireland
Parish registers are one of the most important sources of information for those researching their Irish
family history; particularly in the period before the commencement of civil registration. This publication
covers most of the major religions of the 19th century - Church of Ireland, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian,
Methodist, Huguenot, Jewish, Palatine, Quaker, Baptist & Congregationalist.

A Guide to the 1796 Spinning Wheel Premium Entitlement List (a.k.a. the Flaxgrowers List)
The 'Flaxgrowers List' is an important census substitute listing over 60,000 individuals covering almost
every county in Ireland (except Dublin and Wicklow). Information in the survey is limited to: name, county,
civil parish). If nothing else, the list confirms the presence of a particular name in an area at that time. N.B.
This publication is a 'guide' only and does not include the names of any individuals.

How to Google effectively and maximise the benefits to your Irish research

cases, we are only scratching the surface of this marvellous search engine. If you know what you're doing,
you can use Google to search within websites, bring back sites that no longer exist, locate photos, and
track down missing relatives. This practical "how to" guide has something for everyone - from the novice
right through to the most experienced internet user.

Civil Registration: a practical guide to searching the Birth, Marriage & Death records of Ireland
