The museum which, as its name suggests, has a predominantly maritime focus, is a goldmine of information for genealogists researching Port Chalmers people and ships. The first point of reference is usually the monumental Port Chalmers Early People and Ships compiled by Ian Church but a word of warning if you are relying on this important resource: they are making additions and corrections to this almost every day as new information comes to hand so it is strongly advised to check with the Museum for additional information.

For example, Police archives less than 70 years old are restricted. THEY DO NOT CURRENTLY HOLD LOCAL GOVERNMENT ARCHIVES.
